The City of Vancouver has turned a vacant lot in an industrial area of East Vancouver into a supportive housing project that houses nearly 100 people. The name Alewem comes from traditional Coast Salish language and means ” Home” , ” To be at Home”.
Each of the units measure about 320 square feet and include a kitchenette, bathroom, living/sleeping area, and individual heating. Two meals will be provided to the residents each day. We focus on collaborative case management and resident directed goals, to empower residents to find their own path to wellness. Our Whole Life Housing (WLH) Program uses a bottom-up approach, which allows residents to determine their own wellness goals and needs with the help and support of their family, friends and support teams. B.C. Housing will be responsible for overseeing the tenant application process, while the building will be managed and staffed by Community Builders Group, a non-profit housing operator.
