The Shelter Support Worker provides support to shelter guests and maintains a safe, clean, and welcoming space for homeless individuals in need of temporary accommodations.
Duties & Responsibilities:The responsibilities of the Shelter Support Worker include:
- Familiarizing themselves with Community Builders' Policies and Procedures, as well as Emergency Protocols.
- Completing and submitting shift reports, noting significant guest interactions as per guidelines and using the Community Builders database.
- Monitoring and checking off guests seen on the roster to inform the 48-hour bed turnover policy.
- Enforcing shelter guidelines set by Community Builders.
- Reporting any infractions of shelter policies to the Coordinator and Management for preparing Incident Reports.
- Responding promptly to crises, including overdoses and medical emergencies, and utilizing emergency services when necessary. Being familiar with non-violent crisis intervention procedures to deescalate conflicts and aggressive behaviors of guests.
- Maintaining professionalism during interactions with shelter guests as per policies.
- Facilitating the serving of three meals a day within the shelter.
- Conducting regular rounds inside and outside the shelter, including patio areas, washrooms, storage spaces, and other Community Builders buildings as needed.
- Assisting in maintaining shelter standards, including recording fire safety deficiencies, maintenance issues, pest control problems, clutter, and health and safety hazards.
- Allowing guests access to Harm Reduction supplies and restocking as needed.
- Facilitating entry to the shelter by outreach teams and medical organizations to help guests access housing and medical assistance when required.
- Performing regular cleaning tasks to ensure the cleanliness of the shelter, including washrooms, changing sheets on beds, laundry, garbage disposal, perimeter checks, and picking up any garbage.
- Being willing to relocate to other shelter sites when operationally required.
- Refer to the additional tasks list posted in the shelter.
Education, Training & Experience:
- A minimum of completed Grade 12 education.
- Six (6) months of recent related work experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Certificates in Narcan Training, First Aid, and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training (NVCI).
- Criminal record check.
