About the site

This project serves as a residence for a total of 98 individuals, accommodated across two adjacent buildings. Significantly, the project's name, "álewem" (al-uh-wem), derives from the traditional Coast Salish language, embodying the essence of "Home" and the notion of feeling truly "at Home." Each unit within this development spans approximately 320 square feet, providing ample space for comfortable and self-contained living. The site boasts two meticulously designed professional kitchens, strategically positioned laundry rooms, and inviting common areas furnished with an array of amenities. Tamara’s journey into support services began in 2010. Armed with an associate’s degree focused on Canadian society and early harm reduction initiatives in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, she combined this academic grounding with a lifetime of lived experience to develop a uniquely informed perspective. Over the years, as she worked her way through the ranks of shelters and supportive housing, Tamara has honed a firm yet compassionate approach to service delivery that recognizes the impact of systems on the lives of those she serves. It is a distinct honour to share her experience and knowledge with Community Builders.
