Community Builders has been operating supportive housing in Vancouver since 2001. Today, we run nine supportive sites that house over 700 individuals at risk of returning to homelessness. We’ve seen firsthand the impact of stable housing on both residents and the broader community. Time and again, we have witnessed a direct correlation between access to supportive housing and a decrease in hospital visits, emergency service calls and police interactions. When people are housed within a supportive network, safety improves not only for them but for the entire neighbourhood.
Homelessness is a national crisis, and here in Vancouver, the need for all types of continuum housing—from supportive to affordable housing—has never been greater. With so many of our community’s most vulnerable still without stable shelter, the solution is clear: we need more supportive housing, not less. Vibrant, inclusive communities form in these spaces, places that foster hope, healing and pathways to wellness. As the sustainability of supportive housing comes into question, we remain committed to working alongside our city and provincial partners to ensure that everyone has the opportunity for a safe, stable place to call home.
