In a heartwarming display of unity and support, Community Builders' Indigenous Wellness Worker David Arnault, with the backing of Community Builders and a Federal Canadian Government grant, recently hosted the second annual Reconciliation Through Community event at the Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Center. The event, held in honor of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, drew around 150 attendees who witnessed powerful speeches and performances by Indigenous Elders, Knowledge Keepers and artists.
The gathering featured a lineup of speakers and performers, including James Harry Sr, Ron Horsefall, Viviane Rose Sandy, YB Nakota, Mary Daroche, Love Medicine, and a special appearance by Griz, a Community Builders resident who showcased her vocal talents.
Residents from various Community Builders supportive housing and shelter sites across Vancouver were in attendance, demonstrating the event's importance in providing a platform for open dialogue, learning and understanding. The power of collective healing was evident as both residents and staff participated in the event's activities.
The event concluded with a community feast that was served with pride. The catering was thoughtfully provided by Creenation Creations, and the bannock was prepared by Wayne Belong.
The Reconciliation Through Community event serves as a reminder of the ongoing work required to create a more inclusive and understanding society. It's a testament to the power of community-building initiatives and the impact of culture and art in fostering reconciliation.
