This month, we’re highlighting our value of PERSON CENTERED. At its core, this means focusing on people, not just processes — and responding to individual needs rather than one-size-fits-all solutions.
For Michael, that flexibility has made all the difference. A long-time resident at Metson Rooms, Michael has always valued work, not just for the income it provides but for the sense of purpose it brings. When the pandemic disrupted his usual temp work, he found himself searching for stability and a way to re-engage at his own pace.
Michael first connected with Community Builders through the Street Keepers program, a low-barrier, drop-in opportunity that allowed him to contribute without pressure. When he was ready for something more structured, he joined the RESTART Program, a graduated employment option designed to meet people where they’re at. “It gave me a kind of purpose,” Michael says. “I needed to start the ball rolling, to commit to something.”
Through RESTART, Michael works regular shifts in the kitchen at Naomi Place and at another Community Builders site. The program has adapted around his needs, offering flexible scheduling, transit support and help updating his resume. Learning on the job, particularly alongside Chef Kevin, has allowed him to build skills while seeing the direct impact of his work on the community.
Michael knows that his path isn’t the same as everyone else’s, and that’s the point. Person-centered support means recognizing readiness, ability and ambition as they change over time. For Michael, it’s meant steady work, supportive relationships and renewed confidence in what comes next.
As he puts it, of working in the kitchen with Chef Kevin, “He’s a funny guy. I always look forward to working with him.”
