As part of our renewed Mission Vision Values, we're highlighting our values with stories from staff and residents across Community Builders. This month, we're focusing on our value of collaboration. In essence: we succeed when we work together. We'll let Keira's story do the talking:
When a fire broke out in a unit at Alewem in late August, Mental Health Worker Keira Richardson and her colleagues had to act quickly. Staff came together to evacuate residents, leaning on each other’s communication, training and rapport to get everyone out safely. Keira worked closely with residents who were anxious or reluctant to leave, relying on trust she had built over time.
After the fire department left, the teamwork continued. Alewem staff worked with Property Management to assess the damage and plan for restoration. They helped coordinate temporary housing, ensuring the needs of residents were considered, from pets and personal items to mobility supports.
The days that followed were busy for Keira. She checked in with displaced residents, offered reassurance, and helped them stay informed as repairs moved ahead.
“When something major like this happens, it’s a great equalizer,” she reflects. “During the emergency, we were all on the same team, facing it together. One resident even jumped in to help with the evacuation. They were a real asset.”
Nobody was hurt in the fire, and all second-floor residents are now back home. The experience left a lasting impression at Alewem, a reminder that collaboration isn’t just part of the job—it’s what keeps everyone safe, connected and moving forward together.
